Legion Park Improvement Project

City of Woodburn Breaks Ground on Legion Park Improvement Project

Friday, April 8, 2022 - Identified in the 2009 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, 2014 Legion Park Master Plan, and the 2016 Parks and Recreation SDC methodology, the Legion Park Project has long been a City priority. This project will complete the second, and most significant, phase of improvements to Legion Park.

In 2014, the City initiated the first phase of improvements to Legion Park, including a new pavilion with an expanded lawn area, asphalt pathways with exercise stations, benches, picnic tables and an archeologically themed playground.

This final phase of the project will provide Woodburn residents with access to a top-notch artificial turf soccer facility, covered stadium, and LED field lighting. In addition, the project will include four lighted pickle ball courts and two basketball/ futsal courts, state-of-the-art interactive play features and improvements to the concession stand and parking lot.

In a generous display of their commitment to the Woodburn community, Amazon representatives attending this morning’s event announced they are making a significant contribution to the project.

“At Amazon, we leverage our scale for good and use our ability to innovate quickly to strengthen communities around the world where our employees live and work. Amazon’s culture is built around solving impossible problems, which is why we’re able to take a different, more hands-on approach than most,” said Stephen Maduli-Williams, manager, economic development and public policy, Amazon. “We’re proud of the investments we’ve made in Oregon. This contribution to the Legion Park is a wonderful example of how we work side-by-side with community partners to find solutions to pressing challenges and build long-term, innovative programs that have a lasting, positive impact. We’re excited about our work in this community and grateful to our partners for the opportunity.”

In addition to Amazon’s contribution, the $4.5 million project will be funded by a $ 1 million-dollar grant from the State of Oregon, $750,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and $1.75 million in Parks System Development Charges (SDC).  Construction on the project begins this month and will be completed later this fall.
