The volunteer program provides opportunities for community members to actively support the City with various projects and programs, which serve the citizens of Woodburn. The significant contribution of time, energy, special skills and expertise are respectfully appreciated and your help allows the City to offer a higher level of service to the citizens of our community than we would otherwise be able to provide. Once an individual submits their application and Criminal History Disclosure Form, there is a review process, assessment of best "fit" for volunteering and coordinating for an orientation, training and placement at a site. Background checks will be completed on individuals 16 and older.

Below are listed the volunteer opportunities currently available. If one of these positions interests you, please complete the volunteer application and the criminal background check form.  You can send them to Mike Jansen at mike.jansen@ci.woodburn.or.us or bring them to the library.  It typically takes a week or two to run the check.  For any questions, contact Mike at mike.jansen@ci.woodburn.or.us or call at 503-982-5259.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Morning Holds Aide - Available shifts - Mornings -  Saturday - 8:45 to 9:30 start time.

Duties: In this role, you will receive a list of books and other items that have been placed on hold to be picked up at Woodburn or sent to other libraries.  Your task will be to find all the books, check them in using our computers, and place them in the proper location. If you start early enough, the library will be closed to the public.

Physical Requirements:  Work is performed indoors. Physical activities required by work include reach, grasp, bend, stoop, push, pull, walk, stand, lift, sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, visual acuity to see details at close range and in distance.

Time Commitment: Morning holds typically take 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the length of the list and how familiar you are with the sections of the library.  If you wanted to limit your time to 45 minutes or an hour, library staff could finish the work for you.  This is a weekly job, but we understand when conflicts arise, such as vacations, doctor's appointments, or other commitments you have made.  We ask that if you take the position, you feel like you could reasonably commit to 2-4 times a month.

Afternoon Holds Aide - Available shifts - Afternoons -  Tues. Weds. Thurs. Sat. - 3:00-3:30 start time.

Children's Aide - Available shifts - On-Call for Events or Projects

Duties: In this role, you either help the children's librarian with craft preparation, program assistance or project work.  Craft preparation consists of cutting, coloring, tracing and organizing.  Program assistance means helping out at a program providing direction or assistance during the event to children and parents.  Russian and Spanish speakers welcome.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed indoors, though some work will happen outside during the summer.  Physical activities required may include some cutting and work with your hands.  You may be asked to stand, bend, walk and any number of light physical activities.  When we talk to you about the project, we will tell you the level of physical activity so you can choose if it is appropriate for you.

Time Commitment: This is on-call, so hours and amount of work may vary.  It may be you would come in for a one hour program to work with kids, or it may be we will ask you to prepare a craft that could take up to a few hours.  We will present the work to you, and you can decide how much of a commitment you are willing to make.

Museum Volunteer (Organizer) - Available shifts - Thursdays

Duties: In this role, you would help catalog, sort, and prepare items in the collection.  You may be asked to work on exhibits, but the work would mostly be helping to order the collection.  You may be asked to enter items into the catalog, photograph or scan documents.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed indoors.   You may be asked to stand, bend, walk and any number of light physical activities.

Time Commitment: We are asking for a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours a week.  Right now, we only need people on Thursdays, though this may change come summer.

Bookmobile Aide - Afternoon or weekend shifts, or On-Call events.  Call to discuss options.

Duties: In this role, you will ride in the bookmobile with a staff member and help deliver programs and services.  This may include, but is not limited to, helping children and adults find books, helping set up a craft or helping with a summer reading program sign-ups. You may help people get library cards or simply make connections with community members.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a box of a bookmobile and outside in nicer conditions.  You will do some standing, bending, walking and any number of light physical activities.

Time Commitment: If you would like the role of a regularly scheduled assistant, this would be a regularly scheduled activity. We understand when conflicts arise, such as vacations, doctor's appointments, or other commitments you have made.  We ask that if you take the position, you feel like you could reasonably commit to 2-4 times a month.  If you would like to be on-call for events, we want you to be aware most events would happen on Saturdays.
